I’m sorry, I just need to complain right now.

ESRB overrated Persona 4. It really doesn’t deserve the Mature rating.

I’m going to pick apart the rating under the cut and I’d like people to prove me wrong.

First off, the reason it’s tagged for blood and gore:

Pixilated blood spray is briefly depicted during battles, and colored bloodstains stain some walls and floors.

I really don’t see the blood spray from the characters in the party, if that’s what it’s referring to. If it’s talking about the Shadows, that doesn’t look like blood at all. It looks more like red smog.

The bloodstains is pretty much referring to the dungeon you hear Saki in, unless there’s something in the last dungeons I’m missing. If I’m not missing anything, then the bloodstains show up a grand total of…one dungeon.

I think teenagers could handle a little blood. Given that games where bloodstains are prominent are kind of popular from what I’ve heard, there’s no point in making it sound like every dungeon has blood on the floors and walls.

The next part:

Some female monsters (female Persona) are depicted with their breasts exposed, while other monsters have phallic-shaped heads and torsos. Other female Personas (e.g., ‘Succubus’) have sexual characteristics that are described in text: ‘They visit sleeping men and have sexual intercourse with them.’

Oh no! Female Personae have boobs! What ever will we do?

…for the most part, unless it’s pretty much full-on nudity, I don’t see an issue here. Is it that bad to show a female chest?

And I don’t know about any other Persona that could be phallic-shaped besides Mara, but I really don’t think people are going to react overtly negatively to a penis on a chariot.

About Succubus and Incubus? Are we really going to dance around the subject of sex here? It’s normal, for god’s sake! What, do you want people to reproduce asexually?

Of course, there’s the issue of Rise, Kanji and Naoto and their Shadows. Rise…well, there’s no real stripping going on. We can’t really tell what’s supposed to be on the Shadow’s monstrous form.

Kanji’s Shadow, as I see it, is kind of a jab at the gay stereotypes: flamboyant, hits on every guy…you get the point. If it’s because of Kanji questioning his sexual orientation that the rating got bumped up to M, then we have an issue there. For the record, it’s normal for people to question their sexual orientation. Kanji happens to be one of those people.

And then Naoto. Naoto had to fake her gender in order to avoid harrassment and discrimination at work. You know what? I’d do the same in her position. She’s brilliant, but because she’s female, she might get hurt for it, so she has to dress up as a man.

Let’s not even dare go into the pageant. Let’s just not.

Yes, there will be some mentally immature people playing the game, but if the rating is bumped up to M because of the above topics, then people are going to get the wrong idea about the game and some of the less intelligent people might think that you can actually have sex in this game if not properly informed.

And now, the last issues:

Story elements also make references to alcohol, including a long scene in which the main characters hang out in a club and play ‘drinking games.’ Although alcohol is never consumed, the characters display the telltale signs of intoxication: slurred speech, staggered walking, and red faces. Profanity (e.g., sh*t, a*shole) can be heard in the dialogue.

Let’s be honest here, it’s easy to mistake the King’s Game thing as a whole drunk thing. It was clarified that it was just the atmosphere that got them drunk. They didn’t actually get drunk.

And to add to that, let me remind you of the context of the Club Escapade scenario:

The main characters wind up visiting Iwatodai for a student program and it leads to them visiting Club Escapade, courtesy of Rise. They get drunk off the atmosphere and they play the King’s Game, and Naoto attempts to question them before the game starts, but no luck.

Ryotaro actually got drunk during the events of the game, but it wasn’t shown he was an alcoholic or anything like that.

Is it that bad to bring up alcohol within a game? It’s not saying ‘hey kids, drinking alcohol is cool, you should do it’, for pete’s sake.

And now addressing the profanity issue: as long as it’s not swearing every few seconds, there’s really not much of an issue there.

I’m not saying to dumb the rating down to E10+. It’d be better if you changed it to T, because otherwise, people are going to get the wrong idea about this game. It’s such a good game that doesn’t deserve that high a rating.
